Objectives:
As lab manager for Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) research in Shanghai, deliver technical solutions for complex R&D assignments to develop new formulation and process using existing & new technologies, methods etc.,
Actively drive the technical development and knowledge gain for BASF R&D in Thermoplastic Polyurethane field.
Main Tasks:
R&D Project Management
Develop new Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) formulation & processing solutions using existing and new technologies, methods etc. Constantly discuss and align the research activities with Product development team, sales & marketing, AD/TD, production teams .
Initiate and lead independently the global or regional TPU projects; Transform the project objectives into work plans for TPU lab team, analyze & interpret experimental results. Proactively drive research projects, closely watch and achieving project milestones within timeline and budget.
Develop new methods/procedures for compounding, testing or analysis within the TPU R&D team.
Present and document results, prepare research reports and file patents.
Lab Team Leadership
Instruct and coach the lab chemist for certain TPU subprojects; perform tasks under general leadership of experienced research scientist/team leader.
Ensure the efficient operation of the lab facilities and initiate continuous operation improvement measures
Implement and ensure compliance with BASF standards regarding EHS in the lab team activities
Scientific Research
Continuously observe, analyze, assess scientific and technical trends in Polyurethane products, processes, applications, industries
Closely follow and evaluate scientific literature, publications, IP and draw conclusions for BASF
Requirements:
Ph.D. in Chemistry with a primary focus on at least one of the following: polymer chemistry, physical/organic chemistry, material science or polymer process engineering.
At least 5 years’ experience (including PhD period) in conducting scientific experiments on Polyurethane or polymeric materials.
Having international research experience & good knowledge on polymer formulation and/or processing would be a plus.
Well acquainted with standard IT applications, excellent written and spoken communication skills in English. Having German or Japanese language proficiency would be a plus.
